Friction in Our Lives

Author: Tracy Coulson

Students will learn about friction and force in this hands-on lesson.  Students will look at how different surfaces affect friction in order to get a better understanding of the following:

1. Friction is a force that opposes motion, or makes it difficult for an object to move across a surface.
2. The amount of friction depends on the surface type and the force pressing two surfaces together.
3. Everyday life provides examples of how friction both helps and hinders everything we do.

It is in elementary school where we can capture the imagination and wills of students to pursue the sciences. Those of us in elementary school need help also with best practices/ideas for class activities/lessons around the STEM concepts. Thank you for working with middele school and highschool teachers. Don't forget elementary teachers.
