STEM Connect Virtual Event

Sharks: Myth vs. Reality

Author: Andy Dehart

Presented by Andy Dehart, Discovery Channel Shark Advisor

Friday, September 16, 2011, 1pm ET

For Classrooms (focus on grades 6-8)

Did you know that there are over 400 species of sharks? Or that sharks have lived on our planet for more than 450 million years? Bring your students and join Andy Dehart, marine biologist and Discovery Channel Shark Advisor, to learn about the unique biology of sharks and explore some of the most common myths surrounding these feared creatures. Students will walk away with a new understanding of the evolution and biology of sharks and their role in the ocean ecosystem.

Andy Dehart serves as Director or Fishes & Aquatic Invertebrates for the National Aquarium Institute as well as Discovery Channel shark advisor. Read more about him by downloading his bio from the Classroom Connections box to the right.

I tried to sign up for this site and every time it said I needed a different email address. I tried both my home and work and both were declined. What do I do now. I want to access the info, but am blocked.

Just got this today. I do not have enough time to set it up so all my students can participate live, and our schedule does not line up with the presentation time. Will the webinar be available for download so I can use it for all my classes later on? This would be a great intro our shark unit in April. Thank you

I am a virtual teacher and have never participated. Our students are across the state at their own computers. Would it be possible for us to join? I have an Elluminate classroom and I could application share, but I'm concerned about connection speed. Would that be a practical solution?

what will the air time in New York?

Rhonda Harison says:

Is there a way to have the webinar play on my students' individual computers? They each have one, but do not have cameras attached and would need to use a central phone line on speaker to ask questions.

Is there a fee for this?

Siemens STEM Academy says:

@Nicholas: This will be PowerPoint accompanied by a few videos. I hope you are able to attend!

Will the webinar be solely powerpoint presentation or will there be any video. I participated in the Jeff Corwin one on the Oil Spill but it was hard to keep the attention of my 6th grade students because it was just the speaker in the background with the powerpoint slides up front, I didn't know if this is the format of all webinars or not. Please let me know, sounds really cool!! How will my students be able to interact since we have one to one computing. Thanks

@Kathy: Yes it would be appropriate for your class. Some content may be over their heads but they should still enjoy it and get a lot out of it.

How long will the webinar last? I have a class that runs until 1:30 but we could watch that much. Or would it be better to watch it after it is posted?

Siemens STEM Academy says:

@Jen: Yes, this will be recorded and posted within two days following the live webinar. Thanks for your interest!
